Architektur und neue Medien. Die Bedeutung digitaler Technologien für die Entwurfs- und Baupraxis der 1990er Jahre

Since Computer Aided Design affected the architectural practice, possibilities and limits of digital design have been under discussion. In this respect, the experimental approaches of the 1990s had a major impact on theories and practices of design. Based upon the application of digital technology, architects claimed to redefine the relation between men, environment and nature. By analyzing the main positions of that time, my project will show in what ways digital tools, design practices, office logistics, together with an interlinked applied terminology, acted upon new design theories and practices. Further, in what ways a new understanding of design also changed the conditions of fabrication. Besides digitalization and computational design – which are based on, and produce, explicit knowledge – implicit contributions, which are difficult to grasp, and practical knowledge come into play. Right there, where specific challenges for digital design and its development can be found, the project seeks for a plausible explanation.
