The project for the shopping district in Phoenix Arizona takes the development of American commercial spaces from service type of shopping towards immersive scenographic space as its inspiration. Focusing on the role of the electric signage, the project is intended to give a new direction to the function of the billboard and to develop a creative exchange between commercial and non-commercial space. The design of the animated billboard is implanted as a new layer on top of the existing strip mall structure. Its vertical architecture functions as billboard signage for the area while offering habitable space to a diversity of programs of small, medium and large scale: motel rooms, video boxes, slot machines, studios, shop windows, sandwich shops, showrooms and outlets. Through the additional vertical structure new zones are created on the site: a Viewing Zone; a Habitable Zone; a Green Zone and a Play Zone.

The air conditioning technology makes use of the extreme climatic conditions in Phoenix Arizona: plants at the back of the new building store the cold and humidity during the nighttime and distribute fresh and cool air during the hot daytime. During the day a transparent insulation glass refracts the light back onto the street and reduces the heat inside the building.
